El Portalet is the gate that links the rear side of the old quarter with Church Square. It functions as a second entrance to the historic core. Overall, it is a small feature with a remarkably strong historical reading.
It was part of the former walled enclosure on which the first town was shaped. That medieval perimeter relied on elevated topography, church walls, and the rear lines of surrounding houses. Its current layout still allows that defensive logic to be read.
Over time, El Portalet lost its military role and became integrated into everyday movement through the village. Even so, it retains value as a material trace of the first urban nucleus. Its continuity links today’s street pattern with Benitatxell’s medieval origin.
Crossing it from the square opens a viewpoint with wide panoramas over the coast and nearby hills. From this point, you can identify the Montgó, Cape Sant Antoni, the Bay of Xàbia, and the slopes rising toward Puig Llorença.
Broadly speaking, El Portalet brings together urban history, relief, and landscape in just a few meters. It is a short passage, yet dense in heritage meaning. Its greatest appeal lies in turning an everyday access into a true territorial window.
