Pesqueras

Pesqueres, a fishery is a fishing system done in a specific point at the base of a cliff. The access to this place was made by installing a set of ropes and ladders that permitted one to go down the cliff and where you could fish at night. This point was a projection from the rock or a reed similar to a platform attached to the cliff by four rope straps. This type of fishing was dangerous.
Some of the fishermen lost their lives because they fell into the sea from these fisheries. Furthermore, it was an activity which was done totally to survive in the town. Above all, when the vine season finished, cuttlefish and squid were the principal fish they got. The fish were sold house by house or in the street market set up in the major street of the town.
There are some fisheries along the cliffs between Cape of Saint Antonio and Morro de Toix since the 17th century, although its expansion happened between the 18th and the 19th centuries. The fisheries of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell had a private cave or a refuge. The most important fisheries in the town were Xoshim, Les Coles, Pepe, Llamo, El Rio, near the Cova dels Arcs and La Taula under the Morro Falquí.
